Obtain the native export
Do not rely only on a phone recording of a monitor or a clip forwarded through a messaging application. Export the relevant period directly from the DVR, NVR or camera system using the system’s native export function.
Include context around the event
Preserve sufficient footage before and after the event. A narrow clip may omit relevant movement, lighting changes, camera switching, system interruptions or events needed to interpret the recording.
Retain the player and system information
Some systems use proprietary formats. Export the manufacturer’s player software when offered and record the recorder make, model, serial number, camera number, displayed date and time, and any known clock difference.
Protect the original export
Copy the export to reliable media, calculate hash values where possible, retain an untouched master copy and use a separate working copy for viewing or conversion.
Avoid unnecessary conversion
Converting footage can change metadata, frame timing, resolution or compression. Any converted viewing copy should be clearly distinguished from the preserved native export.
