Recovery is not guaranteed
Deleting a message does not always remove every related artefact immediately. Copies may remain in application databases, notifications, media folders, backups, linked devices or another participant’s device. In other cases, deleted content may be overwritten or inaccessible because of encryption.
Factors affecting recovery
Important factors include whether the phone is locked or unlocked, the Android or iOS version, the WhatsApp version, whether backups exist, whether the device continued to be used, and what extraction method is technically available.
Why screenshots are not enough
Screenshots may be useful leads, but they usually do not preserve the complete message database, metadata, account context or surrounding conversation. Native data and forensic extraction provide a stronger basis for examination.
What to do immediately
Stop unnecessary use of the phone. Do not uninstall WhatsApp, clear storage, reset the device, update the operating system or create new backups without advice. Keep the device charged and record its current condition.
What the examiner can report
A report should state what data was acquired, what was found, what could not be recovered, and any limitations. It should avoid claiming that absence of a message proves it never existed.
